Reflection about cultural communication
The customer is always met as an individual. Talking to customer by customers name and greeting the customer in Finnish. Greeting in Finnish can help increase the feeling of togetherness. After greeting you can ask in which language he wants to continue. If you are unsure about the pronunciation of the name, you can ask the customer directly.
Use clear language, speak one thing at a time. Make sure the customer has understood the core issues. Talking about everyday things builds trust. Ask, how's it goin. Remember, person's identity consists of many different things, a person is more than a refugee or an immigrant.
You have to
be aware that every culture has its own values, ideals and ways of doing
things. Consider the influence of your own culture on your actions and
attitudes. You can ask the customer directly if you are wondering something.
Using an interpreter when necessary is important. The interpretation must be external, from the point of view of the customer's and the employee's legal protection.
Sometimes the client's cultural background collides with our understanding of the disease and its treatment. You should talk to the customer and ask how he sees things and justify them. People who come from warm countries have different illnesses and diseases in their home countries than we have here in the cold north. The customer is told how to operate here and why, as well as what the possible symptoms could be.
If customer feel
old at 50 years old in his own culture and the client would like to retire in
Finland, I would refer him to counseling and guidance from social services. That
way, the customer would receive guidance, and could, for example, get access to
various training and working life services. If necessary, also to health
services if there are health concerns.
